These are the greatest cycling routes in Mallorca that you should not miss

You must experience these breathtaking cycling routes on Mallorca, whether you are a novice or a seasoned cyclist. There is strong evidence to back the notion that the island is the center of European cycling, with the number of visitors now topping 150,000 annually as well as some professional teams establishing training centers here during the winter.

The island has rightfully acquired its reputation thanks to its warm and sunny autumn, winter, and spring weather as well as its challenging terrain, well-maintained roads, and sophisticated infrastructure. Cycling enthusiasts can find picturesque, calm country roads all around the island, some of which lead to old castles, monasteries perched on mountaintops, and lighthouses. If you’re on the island for a cycling vacation, these are the routes you shouldn’t miss.

Tramuntana Costal Road

Undoubtedly Mallorca’s most beautiful road is the 110 km west coast road that stretches from Pollensa in the north to Andratx in the south. The 2,520-meter ascent takes you over the Coll de Femenia, Puig Major (the highest peak on Mallorca), Can Costa, Cap des Bosquet, Coll de sa Gramola, es Grau, and ends at Andratx. The Puig Major road is 13.7 kilometers long with a height of 818 meters and an average gradient of 6%. You’ll pass through some of the most picturesque mountain villages along the way, such as the orange-hued Sóller valley, the renownedly picturesque village of Deià, the monastery town of Valldemossa, the coastal villages of Estellences and Banyalbufar (Both are strongly recommended for a tea break with classic almond cake.), and then it’s all downhill to the town of Andratx.

Cap de Formentor

One of the most well-known cycling routes on Mallorca is the Cap of Formentor. At the bottom of the 20 km winding road, which ends at the lighthouse atop Cap de Formentor and gives some of the most breathtaking views on the island, is the charming northern town of Port de Pollensa. The road used to be highly crowded in the summer with rental cars and tourist buses, but it is now much more bicycle-friendly thanks to a prohibition on most motor vehicles in July and August (between 10:00 and 19:00).

Coll de Soller

The Sóller Tunnel opened in 1997, and practically all motorized traffic now uses it to bypass the mountain’s twisting roadways. As a result, the former road is now a cyclist’s paradise. Coll de Soller is a good climb from either side, but it is more difficult going south.

Sa Calobra

The small fishing community of Sa Calobra is noted for its breathtaking views, hairpin curves, and difficult ascent – 10 kilometers with an approximate gradient of 7% and a few 12% kicks near the end.

Palma

The most popular cycling trail in Palma spans along the seafront from Porto Pi to El Arenal, going through the chic neighborhoods of El Molinar, Portixol, Ciudad de Jardn, and the vacation destinations of Playa de Palma and Arenal. The path is mostly level, but keep an eye out for other cyclists, rollerbladers, walkers, dogs, children, and a variety of other potential hazards along the way. Putting that aside, cycling is a fantastic way to explore the city promenade, beaches, and nightclubs, bars, restaurants, and hotels in the vicinity of the capital. Along the way, there are beautiful views, and there are plenty of beach cafes and restaurants by the water where you can pause and take it all in.

Orient and the central region

The center section of Mallorca has mostly flat terrain and passes through stunning attractive villages such as Santa Maria and Bunyola. You can alternatively ascent Coll d’Honor to Orient, descend into Alaró, and return to your starting point, or continue on to Selva, Lloseta, and Caimari. There are numerous ways to travel back and forth so you may discover more of the island. Coll d’Orient, a gradual ascent with excellent road surfacing that makes for a nice descent, presents the largest obstacle on this route.

Renting a bike in Palma is simple, but it is recommended that you book ahead of time. Whatever it is that you may need, we would be more than happy to assist you in any way we can, so if you are looking for a vacation in Mallorca and want all the stress taken out of it, getting to see all the highlights, and also having excellent guides and support along the whole way, then look no further. Cycling on Mallorca: Experience Heaven on Earth

Cycling in Mallorca allows you to experience forested coastlines, a Mediterranean climate and beautiful views of the bright blue Mediterranean Sea. The best way to explore the island’s natural beauty is by bike. Picturesque scenery along the coastal roads, lush orchards, sandy beaches and green hills awaits you along the tours and always show you a new facet of the Mediterranean island. It is not for nothing that many professional cyclists come to the island every year to train. But Mallorca also offers ideal conditions for hobby cyclists. Whether with a racing bike, mountain bike or trekking and touring bike, there are tours and routes of all levels of difficulty all over the island. In the following article, we have compiled some interesting facts about Mallorca that has made it into a cyclist’s paradise.

Mallorca is located in the Mediterranean Sea off the east coast of Spain and is the largest of the Balearic Islands. From Germany, the island can be reached within two hours by plane. If you don’t want to do without your own bike on your cycling tours through Mallorca, you can take it with you without much effort. Well packed, you can usually check in your bike as special luggage at the airport without any problems. But even without your own bike, cycling tours in Mallorca can be realised. Since cycling is one of the most popular leisure activities of the locals, you can rent a bike easily and inexpensively everywhere. There is a wide range of bikes on offer, from classic touring bikes to racing bikes or mountain bikes. The island is very well developed and the well-developed road network as well as the side roads with little traffic make it easy to make progress on Mallorca’s cycle paths. With the exception of the mountainous region around the Serra de Tramuntana, an average level of fitness is sufficient to master the cycling tours on Mallorca.

Enjoy the Mediterranean climate and unique nature on bike tours in Mallorca

The island’s Mediterranean climate makes it possible to explore Mallorca by bike all year round. If temperatures around 15°C are not too cold for you, you can still plan your bike tour between December and February. However, the vegetation is particularly beautiful in the spring months, when the meadows are bright green and the bushes along the coastal roads are in bloom. If you travel to Mallorca in summer, you should be prepared for temperatures between 27°C and 30°C. The hot midday hours, however, are not recommended. However, you can bridge the hot midday hours with a refreshing swim. However, you should never forget sunscreen and headgear if you want to explore the surroundings by bike.

The Mediterranean Island is considered a true plant paradise: Fig trees, olive and lemon plantations criss-cross the slightly hilly landscape. A wide variety of plants blossom in every season, giving the landscape a wide range of different faces. If you plan your cycle tour on Mallorca between January and March, a sea of pink almond blossoms awaits you. In summer, the purple and pink flowers of the bougainvillea shine on the walls of houses and along the coastal roads. Hibiscus, red poppies and oleander mix with the lush green of the meadows and the azure sea to create magnificent colour compositions. In the mountainous regions of the Serra de Tramuntana there are shady forests with holm oaks and white pines, where the many voices of the rich birdlife can be heard. At times, up to 300 different bird species can be observed on the island. The inland is flat and characterised by wide fields, sleepy little towns and idyllically situated farms.

Exploring the northeast of Mallorca

This region stretches across the rugged cliffs of the Cap Formentor peninsula, down to the beautiful sandy beach of Playa de Muro on the Badia d’Alcúdia. Nature lovers in particular will enjoy exploring the landscape of the north-eastern coast on extended bike tours. The S’Albufera nature reserve, the largest wetland on the Balearic Islands, is located between Port d’ Alcúdia and Can Picafort and is excellent to explore on two wheels. Along the rocky coast you have the best view of the Mediterranean. If you want to experience the wild and romantic landscape, you should go on the Pollença bike tour. The 80km ride starts in the port town of Alcúdia, one of the oldest towns on the island, and leads along the coast to the bay of Pollença. Along the way there are magnificent views of the azure sea and the rocky coastline. The bay’s sandy beach invites you to take a refreshing swim before the tour leads through the mountains of the Serra de Tramuntana, Mallorca’s largest mountain range. After crossing the wooded mountain landscape, which is characterised by dense pine forests, it is worthwhile to stop briefly in the small town of Sa Pobla, in whose small restaurants you can fortify yourself with a Sopas Mallorquinas, a traditional stew, before the route leads back to Alcúdia.

Looking into the island’s southern region

If you are interested in a balanced mix of beach and culture, you should plan your cycle tour in Mallorca along the south coast, because along the coast there are magnificent beaches and old towns in constant alternation. The official paved Playa de Palma cycle route runs 28km directly on the seafront and always along the coast from Arenal beach to Palma and the old town’s cathedral. The route is suitable for a leisurely ride along the southwest coast, always alternating between sandy beaches and rocky cliffs. When you arrive in the old town of Palma, you should definitely pay a short visit to the cathedral, which towers over the city on a small hill. The tour can easily be extended to include the Cala Major cycle path, which leads to the seaside resort of Cala Major, located in a small bay. Here you can swim in the crystal-clear water.

Explore the east coast on the cycle paths around Cala Ratjada.

In the northeast of Mallorca, in the shadow of the Serres de Llevant, lies the former fishing village of Cala Ratjada, which is now one of the most popular holiday destinations on the island. The east coast is characterised by the so-called calas, deeply cut bays with fine sandy beaches surrounded by steep cliffs. In between are idyllic harbour villages. In the surrounding area, you can take cycling tours of between 20 and 40km in length, which lead to the many excursion spots in the region. One of the most interesting routes takes you along the small bays to the old fortress of Capdepera. A visit to the impressive stalactite caves Cuevas de Artà and the picturesque little harbour villages with their colourful markets is also possible in the course of the bicycle tours. On the east coast you will also find many secluded beaches, such as the Jardines March, which can be easily reached by bike and where you can swim and relax in the sun completely undisturbed.

Mallorca, a cyclist’s paradise

Mallorca’s 2,071 kilometers of local roads and pathways have made it a favourite destination for cyclists. This island’s varied topography, mild Mediterranean temperature, and bicycle-friendly infrastructure make it a cyclist’s heaven. Additionally, Mallorca is an island with a rich cycling culture. This is evidenced by Mallorca’s high number of cycling enthusiasts, its vast number of velodromes built at the turn of the 20th century, and its numerous professional athletes, including globally renowned cyclists Guillem Timoner and Joan Llaneras.

Cycling is possible throughout the year, with October to May being the ideal period to engage in this activity. In December, it is typical to see the world’s top professional cycling teams training and preparing for the season on the roads of the island. The first event on the schedule is the Mallorca Challenge, a prestigious event for professional cyclists that typically occurs at the end of January.

In addition to its beauty and superb cycling conditions, amateur teams and fans chose Mallorca for its tourist attractions. Mallorca’s abundance of bicycle rental and maintenance shops makes it a distinctive cycling destination.

Mallorca, Europe’s favorite cycling destination

One of Europe’s most prestigious cycling fairs recently took place. This fair attracted a large number of bicycle enthusiasts interested in learning about the latest developments in the cycling industry.

The fair counted with the outstanding participation of several Spanish companies and institutions, among which was present once again the stand of the Consell de Mallorca, probably the national destination with the greatest impact on bicycle tourism. The Consell de Mallorca shared a stand with different companies involved in the cycling tourism market in the islands, including Cycling Friendly, which took the opportunity to learn first-hand about the interests of European cyclists.

To this end, more than 500 surveys were carried out among those attending the fair, in which they were asked about their favorite destinations within Spain or the types of cycling they usually practice, as well as some of their travel habits. According to the preliminary results obtained in the survey, Mallorca is the destination that generates more interest, with 38% of respondents who chose it among their 3 favorite cycling destinations. A result that highlights the great interest generated by the island not only as a sun and beach destination, but also as an ideal place for the practice of cycling tourism by Europeans.

When asked about their mode of travel, European people surveyed at the fair said that they mostly traveled with friends (30%), their partner (28%) or their family (22%), with a remarkable 14% who said they traveled alone. More minor is the case of respondents who travel with sports clubs, making up 5% of responses. In addition, 59% of those surveyed confirmed having participated in a cycling or triathlon event, one of the elements with the greatest market capacity within the sports sector, and which is confirmed by the success of events such as Mallorca 312 to be held this weekend, which every year is able to concentrate thousands of cycling enthusiasts on the island.

Around 20,000 cycling tourists are expected on Mallorca in the coming months. Tour operators have now scheduled more flights between the Balearic island and Germany, Austria and Switzerland for this purpose. Due to the route conditions, Playa de Palma, Muro and Alcúdia are particularly popular with cycle tourists. Hoteliers are promising a strong low season due to the high demand, which is expected to last until November 15.

Mallorca has become the Mediterranean’s favorite cycling destination in recent years. The season usually lasts from September to May. In the years before the Corona pandemic, up to 200,000 cycling tourists visited the island during these eight months of off-season. cycling tourism generated revenues of around 300 million euros.

Mallorca provides not just the ideal roads, hills, and climate, but also the ideal cycling culture. The majority of the island is cyclist-friendly, with motorists often giving you extra room when passing. Mallorca realized long ago the economic advantages bicycles bring to the island, and as a result, the infrastructure has been designed to accommodate cyclists. It is difficult not to fall in love with Mallorca due to its spectacular mountain and coastal road vistas, gorgeous landscape, and golden beaches.

Why is Mallorca seen as a Cycling Paradise?

Mallorca is a popular destination for cyclists of all skill levels. In the off season, professional cycling teams come here to practice since it is often regarded as a paradise for cyclists. Olympic cyclists like Laura Trott and Bradley Wiggins honed their skills on the roads of the Balearic Islands, where Team SKY has its own training camp. Why is it that many think of Mallorca as a paradise for cyclists?

In addition to being smooth, usually traffic-free, and seemingly limitless, the roads in Mallorca come in a variety of styles. Mallorca’s roads are ideal for honing all aspects of your cycling abilities, from endurance rides on the flats to hairpin turn ascents and descents of the island’s mountain ranges.

Learning to assess slopes, cornering around hairpins, and using the bike and your energy more efficiently all help improve your gear utilization, your breaking, and your steering. These roads will help you become a better cyclist.

Regardless of your cycling experience, the Tramuntana mountain range is a major magnet for cyclists. While cycling near Team SKY’s camp in Puerto Alcudia, Bradley Wiggins made the Sa Calobra journey famous.

Many of our customers wish to do the same journey as Mr Wiggins, which entails 26 hairpin curves and 668 metres of elevation. It’s an unusual path since, without a boat, the only way to get to the seaside settlement from whence the ascent starts is by cycling down the mountain. This descent features 26 hairpin curves and has precipitous drops, so you will need to have your wits about you. As soon as you’ve made it to the settlement, you’ll turn around and go back up.

Puig Major, Mallorca’s tallest peak, is another well-known climb. You bike 14 kilometers with an average grade of 6%, starting from Sóller in the west. The view from the top is breathtaking at 854 meters above sea level.

Cycling Vacations & Training Camps are offered in February, the spring, and the fall. These months are ideal for Cycling. Temperatures vary from 14 degrees Celsius in February to 30 degrees in the spring and in October. It also boasts 300 sunny days every year. This environment is ideal for improving your cycling and is superior than temperatures in Germany, the United Kingdom, and many other nations.
