Mallorca offers many beautiful routes for cycling. Discover the sunny island actively by bike. Here is what you should keep in mind. Mallorca, the cyclists favourite island, offers far more than just sun and sea. It is not only the largest, but also the most diverse Spanish Mediterranean island. And – sometimes only a stone’s throw away from the highly frequented holiday centres in Platja de Palma, S’Arenal, Cala Millor, Alcúdia or Santa Ponça – tranquil, unspoilt and extremely scenic.

With all these charms and the island’s varied landscape, it’s a good idea to discover Mallorca on the saddle of a bicycle. Before you get on your bike or rent a bike and cycle the tours presented here, it is worthwhile to take note of a few useful tips.

Experiencing the largest Balearic Island by bike is probably the best way to experience the true character of the island. However: the geographical peculiarities are felt very quickly in the legs.

Mallorca is almost 3500 square kilometres in size, the length of the coast measures 581 kilometres. About one third of the coastline is developed for tourism, 50 kilometres are designated as bathing beaches.

The road network on Mallorca is very well developed and about 1200 kilometres long – so there are plenty of opportunities to get around by bike. The longest distance from west to east is 96 kilometres, from north to south 76 kilometres. There is no place on Mallorca that is further than 40 kilometres from the sea.

The Tramuntana mountains, the Sierra del Norte, have over 40 peaks over 1000 metres high. The highest peak is the Puig Mayor between Sollér and Lluc at 1445 metres. Here are some of the places that are most popular with holidaymakers. These include Sollér, Valldemosa, Fornalutx and the monastery of Lluc. It is also the Sierra de Tramuntana that protects the island like a rampart from the harsh northwest winds. To the southeast is the plain of Es Pla, which runs into the two bays of Bahía de Pollença and Bahía de Alcúdia to the north. These two bays are separated by the peninsula of La Victoria, which rises again quite high. The eastern part of Mallorca is characterised by a fjord-like coastline, where the Sierra de Levant rises to 500 metres between Santanyi and Cala Ratjada.

The best time to travel for cyclists

The cycling season on Mallorca starts early in the year: as early as the end of January, the almond blossom bathes the island in a sea of blue colours and makes cycling an experience. Until November and December, the pleasantly mild climate attracts touring cyclists, racing cyclists and mountain bikers on their bikes. Mallorca offers cyclists ideal conditions at almost any time of the year, only in midsummer you should not plan too long tours because of the heat and avoid the midday period. March to May, October and November are the most ideal months for longer cycling tours or a cycling holiday.

Rent a bike or take your own

If you don’t want to take your own bike with you, you will find numerous reputable providers on Mallorca who rent out high-quality bikes.
